How to read the radar

Coloured areas are precipitation detected by the radar. The colour shows how intense it is.

Compare consecutive frames to see which way the rain is moving and how fast. Storms can strengthen or weaken quickly, so the direction of movement is only a rough guide for the next hour.

Times on the map

All times are Slovenian local time. ARSO uses UTC in its file names, which is two hours behind local time in summer and one hour in winter.

A new frame is published every 5 minutes, usually with a delay of a few minutes.

Radar limitations

Mountains can block the radar beam, so rain in some Alpine valleys is shown less reliably. Very light drizzle is sometimes missed, and occasional false echoes can appear that are not precipitation.

Coverage

The map covers Slovenia and the neighbouring parts of Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.

How often does the radar update?

Every 5 minutes. New frames are added automatically, so there is no need to reload the page.

Why isn’t the latest frame from this minute?

Processing radar measurements takes a few minutes. If the latest frame is more than half an hour old, a delay notice appears below the map.

Does the radar show hail?

There is a separate hail probability map, also produced by ARSO.

Is this an official forecast?

No. The site shows ARSO data; official weather warnings are published by ARSO on its own websites.
